Family Research Summit
2018

Summary
I helped conduct a multi-phase research initiative for Project Fi, Google's Mobile phone company, around the roll-out of family plans and subsequent parent-friendly features. This research was spun-out into a Family Research Summit which brought together researchers from academia and the tech sector to discuss research and trends around children, families and technology. I helped organize this research conference and curated a 'creative deliverables' fair during the conference.

Initial research

One of my main initiatives for Project Fi was a multi-phase resarch project surrounding families, children, and mobiles devices. At the time, Fi was considering adding Family Plans (they have done this) and other features targeted at families with teens and young children.

In addition to discovering market differentiators, the goal was to seek out and mitigate any harm that might be caused by targeting mobile devices to families and children. We also wanted to discover parental pain points around children having mobile devices.

Research Phases

For this project, the lead was a Senior Researcher who had a background in child psychology. We worked together on a series of in-depth interviews and other projects. I participated in all planning, interviews, analysis, and presentations of this work.

  • Teachers and experts interviews
  • Parents interviewing children (remote)
  • In-depth parents interviews
  • Org-wide Lunch 'n' Learn
  • Brainstorming workshop with Fi Designers and Engineers
  • Family Research Summit (and podcast)
